The CASL Board has been discussing a number of projects to help raise awareness of the importance of school librarians for assuring students obtain critical 21st century skills as defined by the new content standards in Colorado: critical thinking & reasoning, information literacy, self-direction, collaboration and invention.
We would like to challenge each one of you to write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, focusing on the positive aspects of what you do. We know that schools are facing budget issues and in many cases making decisions to cut library positions, and believe this will be devastating for the students of Colorado. It would be easy to focus on the negative, but we feel it is important for you to write about the positive aspects of what you do for kids – perhaps including real comments from your students and teachers. Align your remarks with the five key 21st century skills, and give real examples.
Let’s see how many of these letters you can get published throughout the summer! Once published, share these with pride with your school and district staff. Whether your work is published or not, please do share it here in the comments section. Your words could inspire others in their letter writing efforts!
Let’s make a difference – for the sake of all students in Colorado!
