New Report Calls for Radical Changes in K-12 Education

December 14, the New Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce unveiled a new report about workforce readiness and educational system changes needed to meet the needs of the 21st century workplace.  The report, titled “Tough Choices or Tough Times,” calls for a major overhaul of the way the United States educates its K-12 students to ensure success in the workforce of the future and the viability of American workers in the global economy. The Commission cites strong skills in English, mathematics, technology, and science, together with literature, history, and the arts, as fundamental for success in the competitive 21st century workplace.  In addition, the report cites critical thinking, ability to analyze and synthesize data, self-discipline, innovation, creativity, flexibility
and problem-solving, as critical skills that will prove essential.
